With a little more than a month left in its annual Be A Star! giving campaign, the Capitol Theatre Center has $71,000 more to raise to hit its Dec. 31 deadline.
Since Oct. 1, the campaign has raised $54,000 of the $125,000 goal.
“We started out really strong — things have slowed down,” said theater manager Linda Boeckman.
Now in its fifth year, the Be A Star! campaign is a proactive approach to the theater’s operations, Boeckman said.
December has traditionally been the theater’s largest giving month, so Boeckman said she’s optimistic the theater will make its $125,000 goal by the end of December.
The funds raised from the campaign go toward the approximately $400,000 annual budget, she said.
“We would love for every ticket to pay for everything we do here, but for us to keep our ticket prices low and affordable for the community the Be A Star! campaign helps offset those costs,” Boeckman said.
Last year, the theater failed to reach its $100,000 giving goal, bringing in about $88,000.
This year, Boeckman said the goal was increased due to “lackluster ticket sales.”
Even with the failing economy, Boeckman doesn’t think that’s entirely to blame for the disappointing ticket sales.
“I don’t want to blame everything on it (the economy). There’s a lot of great things going on in the community — a lot of wonderful things for people to experience. And, I think for our future success we have to continue to offer things that are unique,” she said.
Having a historic theater in downtown Chambersburg is an invaluable asset, she said.
“It’s been here 85 years in continuous operation and that says a lot for the community and their support of the theater,” she said. “The theater is a quality of life aspect. It offers people the opportunity for artistic expression and an opportunity to experience live theater in their own backyard.”
