A 53-year-old Chambersburg, Pa., man died early Thursday morning after a one-vehicle crash on U.S. 11 just north of Shippensburg, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

Charles Smentkowski Jr., of 56 S. Main St., was identified as the driver and sole occupant of a 2003 Saturn Ion that left the roadway and struck a telephone pole in the area of 1317 Ritner Highway (U.S. 11), police said.

While traveling north at approximately 4:43 a.m., Smentkowski’s vehicle traveled off the western berm of the road for unknown reasons, struck a mailbox, then slid sideways into the pole, hitting his driver’s door, police said.

Smentkowski was not wearing his seat belt, police said.

U.S. 11 was closed until approximately 8:50 a.m., while utility crews responded to the scene and stabilized the pole, police said.

Units from the Shippensburg Fire Department responded to the incident, which is still under investigation by police.
