SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.—
A 53-year-old Chambersburg, Pa., man died early Thursday morning after a one-vehicle crash on U.S. 11 just north of Shippensburg, according to Pennsylvania State Police.Charles Smentkowski Jr., of 56 S. Main St., was identified as the driver and sole occupant of a 2003 Saturn Ion that left the roadway and struck a telephone pole in the area of 1317 Ritner Highway (U.S. 11), police said.
While traveling north at approximately 4:43 a.m., Smentkowski’s vehicle traveled off the western berm of the road for unknown reasons, struck a mailbox, then slid sideways into the pole, hitting his driver’s door, police said.
Smentkowski was not wearing his seat belt, police said.
U.S. 11 was closed until approximately 8:50 a.m., while utility crews responded to the scene and stabilized the pole, police said.
Units from the Shippensburg Fire Department responded to the incident, which is still under investigation by police.
