The Summit Health Bike Club, in partnership with Highmark Blue Shield, will hold a cycling event on June 18 in Franklin County, Pa., to benefit breast care services offered by Rhonda Brake Shreiner Women’s Center, an affiliate of Summit Health, and the Cumberland Valley Breast Care Alliance.
The Franklin County Metric Century will begin at 8 a.m. in the Summit Health Center parking lot, 757 Norland Ave., Chambersburg. Check-in begins at 7 a.m. Advance registration is required and will be limited to 250 riders.
The cost to participate is $25. Riders must be 16 years of age or older. Register online at www.Active.com, or call 717-375-2676 for registration information.
The event will feature three ride routes — 63 miles, 40 miles and 18.5 miles — through Franklin County. Support vehicles will patrol the course to assist riders, and comfort stations with water and snacks will also be positioned throughout the routes.
Breast cancer is a health concern that hits home with the Summit Health Bike Club. Bike club founder Karen Keefer was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009. During her treatment, Keefer’s love of cycling and her commitment to good health shined through as she continued to train for and compete in several triathlon events.
“I’m a breast cancer survivor,” Keefer said. “Two crucial services here at home, The Rhonda Brake Shreiner Women’s Center and the Cumberland Valley Breast Care Alliance (CVBCA), work together to help women like me as they navigate their illness toward restored health,” she said.
“Proceeds from this event will help support the women diagnosed with breast cancer in Franklin County each year,” Keefer said in the release.
Sponsors for the event are still needed. Those interested in being a sponsor for this event may call 717-267-7703.
