The community response was overwhelming Saturday to a drug take-back event in Greencastle, police said.
“This is the third year, and it’s been the busiest so far,” Greencastle Police Officer T.J. Anderson said.
Four officers manned the event outside Food Lion in Greencastle on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“It keeps drugs out of children’s hands,” Anderson said. “It keeps them from accidentally ingesting something that could be toxic to their systems.”
Pouring medications down the toilet is not the proper way to dispose of them, Anderson said.
“That puts it into our water and then it goes right into the Chesapeake Bay,” she said.
The Greencastle drug take-back event was part of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. Municipalities across Pennsylvania participated.
A National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day held in April collected 276 tons of unwanted or expired medications nationwide, according to the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration website.
