A jury in Berkeley County Circuit Court Tuesday found a 49-year-old man guilty of seven felony counts of sexual abuse and sexual assault that stemmed from allegations involving a teenage girl, according to court officials.
Melvin George Simms of Martinsburg is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 17, according to Berkeley County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Carmela M. Cesare, who handled the case.
The jury’s verdict came on the sixth day of the trial, which was presided over by 23rd Judicial Circuit Judge Gray Silver III.
The alleged sexual contact occurred between 2009 and 2010 when the victim was younger than 15, according to court documents. The victim had told authorities she was pregnant with the defendant’s child as a result of the alleged sexual contact, according to court documents.
Defense attorneys Thomas L. Stanley and William R. Dehaven represented Simms in the trial.
