Cody Michael Unger, 19, who was driving the car, was treated at War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and was to be released Tuesday, Roper said.

The 2000 Honda Prelude that Unger was driving “split in two,” Roper said. Speed was a factor in the crash, which happened around 10:15 a.m., he said.

Roper said he believes the passenger was thrown from the vehicle after Unger lost control and crashed while traveling west on Winchester Grade Road.

Roper said he still was investigating the crash.
