A sidewalk chalk art competition to be held in downtown Martinsburg by an Internet television station was unanimously approved by Martinsburg City Council Thursday.
The Aug. 25 event was proposed by Dan Mace of Mace Television Network, who told council members prizes would be awarded to winners of adult and children divisions.
The chalk-only event, to be held from 1 to 3 p.m., will be filmed for a new segment on the network’s “Talk of the Town” online video magazine and winners will invited to appear on the show, according to Mace.
The new segment, “Jocelynne on the Arts,” is focused on the community’s local art scene, Mace said.
Mace said after the meeting he launched Mace TV in 2004, but didn’t shift the focus of content to local issues until about three years ago.
“I’ve always tried to help the downtown get going,” Mace said of the event and his past involvement with Main Street Martinsburg efforts. Mace assured City Council members that obscene images will not be allowed in the competition and the locations for the artwork competition would be chosen carefully. Children will not be allowed to participate without an adult present, Mace said.
As for his Internet television venture, Mace said much of the filming has been done at the Apollo Civic Theatre and he also has a studio at home.
