A developer’s plan to build a McDonald’s restaurant in Old Courthouse Square shopping plaza will be the focus of a Martinsburg Planning Commission public hearing on Wednesday.
The meeting in Martinsburg City Council chambers at City Hall at 232 N. Queen St., is set to begin at 6 p.m.
If approved, the project would eliminate 71 parking spaces in the 19.6-acre shopping center along Edwin Miller Boulevard (W.Va. 9), according to a statement received Tuesday by the city’s planning department.
The planning commission has been asked to consider a zoning map amendment case that proposes the creation of a restaurant pad site on .99 acres in a parking area for the retail center, according to a copy of the application.
The application by Clarksburg, W.Va.-based Thrasher Engineering Inc., was filed on behalf of SugarOak Old Courthouse LLC of Herndon, Va. The company is a subsidiary of SugarOak Holdings Inc., also based in Herndon.
Planning commissioners also are scheduled to review a sketch site plan for construction of the 4,350-square-foot restaurant and associated parking, according to the meeting agenda and documents filed with the city.
The restaurant is proposed to be next to Summit Community Bank near the “central entrance” to the shopping center off Edwin Miller Boulevard.
If the McDonald’s is built as proposed, there would still be 1,009 parking spaces available at the shopping center, according to the developer.
The current north-end McDonald’s at the intersection of Eagle School and East roads has been targeted for relocation or rebuilding over the years, restaurant operator Susan Erwin has said.
Erwin could not be reached for comment Thursday.
Renderings filed with the planning department indicate the new restaurant would resemble the new McDonald’s built along Apple Harvest Drive on the city’s south end, which Erwin also operates.
Erwin said in an 2011 interview that the north-end location was purchased by her father in 1979.
