The shooting of a Martinsburg woman Friday was the fifth police shooting in the Eastern Panhandle in little more than a year and at least the sixth in the Tri-State Area.
• Sept. 9 — Steven Wayne Taylor of Virginia Beach, Va., was shot and wounded after a two-hour standoff with authorities in Jefferson County. The shooting came after police had responded to a Washington Street residence in Charles Town to investigate a report of a man who was trespassing and had barricaded himself in the residence.
• Aug. 25 — A Berkeley County sheriff’s deputy shot Raymond Wallace II, who was armed with what appeared to be a rifle and was holding a knife to a woman’s neck outside a Falling Waters, W.Va., residence in a tense confrontation. Sheriff’s deputy Ralph Pierce, who fired his weapon four times, was cleared to return to regular duties. Charges of kidnapping, attempted robbery, attempted arson and second-degree sexual assault are pending against Wallace in Berkeley County Circuit Court.
• June 23 — Adam L. Schillinger, 27, of Saugerties, N.Y., was fatally shot after he pointed what was later determined to be a BB gun at Pennsylvania State Police troopers in the early morning hours at a St. Thomas Township, Pa., home. The actions of the officers later were ruled appropriate.
• March 11 — A Martinsburg Police Department officer shot Douglas Charles Butler in the chest after Butler allegedly attempted to stab the officer with a railroad spike. Butler was indicted in May on one count of attempted malicious assault and his case is pending Berkeley County Circuit Court.
• Sept. 26, 2011 — Two Martinsburg police officers shot Michael Kelly Silver, 42, multiple times in the ATM lane of a bank drive-through after he carjacked a woman and her 4-year-old daughter at Martinsburg Mall. The fatal shooting was deemed justifiable by a Berkeley County grand jury that reviewed evidence compiled in the case.
