The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced Thursday that preparatory work begins Sept. 5 on a project to repair and resurface a 1.65-mile section of Pa. 316 from the intersection with East Garfield Street in Chambersburg borough to just south of Garber Road in Guilford Township.

The $1.5 million contract was awarded June 15 to Highway Materials Inc. of Montgomery County, according to a PennDOT news release.

The contract includes roadway base replacement, handicapped curb cut work, drainage work, milling and resurfacing, guiderail installation and new traffic lines, the news release said.

PennDOT said motorists should be aware that from Sept. 5 through November, they may encounter single-lane restrictions with flaggers directing traffic through the work zone on weekdays after 8:30 a.m. as crews repair Pa. 316 in preparation for resurfacing next spring.

Work under this construction contract is scheduled to be completed by June 2013.

This section of Pa. 316 averages more than 7,700 vehicles traveled daily, the news release said.
