One of the largest beauty retailers in the United States unveiled its new 373,000-square-foot Chambersburg distribution center at a grand opening ceremony on Wednesday.
Ulta Beauty began hiring employees in late December for the Chambersburg distribution center, which is near Interstate 81 at 95 Kriner Road.
Jim Scarfone, senior vice president of human resources for Ulta Beauty, said the company has hired nearly 190 local workers with another 200 to be hired in the next two to three years.
“A lot of it (hiring) will depend on the growth of our stores. This year we’ll probably open 100 new stores.
Next year we’ll probably open an equal amount — so that’s going to make this facility an important part of our network,” Scarfone said.
“This is the facility that serves our northeast corridor. It’s a great location. It’s a great building. We’ve got state-of-the art technology in here and a great employee base, so we look forward to a lot of growth coming out of this building,” Scarfone said.
The next phase of hiring will begin in July/August with 40 to 60 local workers to be hired to accommodate the busy Christmas season.
Scarfone said an additional hiring phase could come as soon as spring 2013.
“Based on how many stores we open, we think we’ll have over 400 employees (working) at this facility,” he said.
“Our new Northeast distribution center is an important part of Ulta Beauty’s growth strategy and will support new store growth and online expansion,” said Chuck Rubin, president and chief executive officer.
“With thousands of products being shipped on a daily basis both to our stores and directly to our e-commerce customers, we expect the facility to be busy and efficient. As an added benefit, we also welcome the opportunity to contribute to the economic growth of the local community in Chambersburg.”
Ann Sheeley, of Chambersburg, Pa., who works in the quality assurance department at the new warehouse, said she was hired in February, and wanted to get in on the ground floor.
“Not very many companies are willing to take the risk and open a lot of new stores,” she said. “And you have to have the (distribution center) to support those stores. And because this distribution center is like the flagship for the company, it is an honor to have this in the area.”
