MARTINSBURG, W.Va. —A Winchester, Va., development firm hopes to break ground next year to build a new hotel next to The Commons shopping center near Martinsburg off W.Va. 45.
The hotel, which is expected to have nearly 120 rooms, is part of a 9.9-acre commercial project proposed by Aikens Group, said Steve Parrish, the company’s senior vice president.
In an interview Monday, Parrish declined to name the hotel franchise the company is seeking, but expressed confidence that the proposed development would become reality.
“It’s going to happen,” Parrish said.
In addition to the hotel, the company is looking to bring a franchise restaurant to the site, which is west of Interstate 81 at exit 12, according to Parrish. Additional acreage will be available behind the hotel and restaurant for future development, he said.
Parrish said an initial meeting was held with Berkeley County officials concerning the company’s plans.
The company received an entrance permit from the state Department of Transportation for direct access to W.Va. 45 from the project site, Parrish said. The entrance from W.Va. 45 will be shared by customers of the hotel and restaurant, he said.
Parrish said the project still must clear the county’s review process, which includes consideration by the planning commission.
In keeping with its business model, Aikens Group and its sister companies intend to build, own and operate the hotel, Parrish said.
Aikens Group owns seven hotels in the Shenandoah Valley, including Comfort Inn in Martinsburg, Hampton Inn in Inwood, W.Va., and Hilton Garden Inn, Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott and Hampton Inn properties in Winchester, Parrish said.
The company also owns more than 400,000 square feet of office, retail and warehouse space in the region, including Berkeley Commons and Aikens Center on the north side of Martinsburg off Edwin Miller Boulevard, according to its website.
