The Washington Township (Pa.) Supervisors this week approved a new police contract extending through 2016.
The supervisors and police association have been negotiating a contract since late spring, and they chose to hammer out a four-year deal instead of their usual three-year contract.
Under the terms of the new contract, uniformed, full-time officers will receive base salary increases of 1 percent effective Jan. 1, 2013, and 1 percent effective Jan. 1, 2014. They will receive base salary increases of 2 percent for each of 2015 and 2016.
Hourly pay for part-time officers also will increase under the contract terms.
The starting salary of a full-time patrol officer in 2013 is $46,704, according to the new contract.
Township Manager Mike Christopher said both sides strongly considered the economy as they met at the bargaining table.
