Because of the dry conditions, Appalachian Power has asked for and received approval to reduce its outflow from the Smith Mountain Hydroelectric Project.
Appalachian Power asked for permission from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality on Thursday to reduce the outflow, and received approval.
"We're hopeful that the reduced flows will meet needs both upstream and downstream of the project while protecting environmental and biological resources," Appalachian Power hydro supervisor Teresa Rogers said.
The Smith Mountain Hydroelectric Project involves Smith Mountain Lake and Leesville Lake. According to Appalachian Power, the adjusted water elevation fell below 791 feet in November. The normal full-pond level is 795 feet.
The variance reduces the minimum discharge from Leesville dam, and temporarily suspends the minimum targeted flow at Brookneal.
