VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) — A northwest Indiana judge has given a 15-year prison sentence to a former Indiana Department of Workforce Development auditor who pleaded guilty to firing a shotgun into an agency office.
Porter Circuit Judge Mary Harper sentenced 61-year-old Edgar Tillery on Monday after his December plea on an attempted aggravated battery charge.
Tillery apologized to his former co-workers for the shooting in Portage last March 5 but said no one was in harm's way and that he fired his 12-gauge shotgun only once.
None of the 16 people who were present at the shooting were injured, but office director Jennifer Chappell says some of the employees have needed counseling and some have transferred to other offices.
Tillery retrieved the shotgun from his car after receiving an unfavorable job review.
