INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana's legislative stalemate is continuing as boycotting Democrats say they've come too far to end their walkout without concessions on Republican-backed bills they oppose.
Democratic Rep. Charlie Brown of Gary says Democrats have fought too long to turn back without concessions on education and labor bills. He says the caucus remains united in Illinois, where they fled Feb. 22 to derail bills.
Democratic leader Patrick Bauer issued a statement Tuesday saying the caucus is taking things day by day, but would not back down until the GOP stopped attacking public education and union rights.
Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma said Wednesday that Bauer's statement seemed to him like "retrenchment," not progress toward coming back. Bosma says he'll listen to Democratic proposals but won't take items off the agenda.
