Hawaii is a great setting for sand, surf and crime, as Scott Caan well knows.
The actor is heading toward his second season as Danny "Danno" Williams -- the police detective first made popular by James MacArthur in the original 1968-80 series -- in CBS' reboot of "Hawaii Five-0," which starts afresh Monday, Sept. 19.
In story terms, Caan will have new things to play right off the bat: Danno is virtually the only one who can clear team leader Steve McGarrett (Alex O'Loughlin) of killing the state's governor, who was secretly in league with archvillain Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos).
However, given a choice, Caan always prefers a plot that involves Danno's ex-wife and daughter. "Every time there's one of those scenes, that's what really I get excited about," he says. "It's hard to talk about police stuff every week, so we all kind of thrive on stuff that's about family or relationships."
Caan and his "Five-0" co-stars are guaranteed plenty of fresh guests to work opposite in the show's new season: Terry O'Quinn ("Lost"), Tom Sizemore and William Baldwin have signed up for multiple-episode arcs.
Having also worked recently on the eighth and final season of HBO's "Entourage," Caan hasn't had much time for another love of his: photography. "I've never been busier. As an actor trying to get movie roles, you kind of spend half the year sitting around and the other half doing a job or two.
"I used to wake up and think, 'Oh, I'll spend the day shooting photos.' Now when I have a day off, I don't want to do anything."
Favorite movie: "If it's comedy, my favorite comedy movie of all time is (the original) 'Arthur.' "
Favorite television show you're not in: "To be honest, before I was on 'Entourage,' it was the only show I watched."
Favorite singer: "Sometimes it's Iggy Pop, and sometimes it's Jeff Buckley. I'm all over the place."
