Catherine Irene Boward, 85, of 17716 Timberlane Drive, Hagerstown, Md., died on Tuesday, June 19, 2012.
Born March 24, 1927, in Washington County, Md., she was the daughter of the late Gerold B. and Esther F. Moats Hemphill.
Her husband, Chester A. Boward, died in 1992.
She was a graduate of Williamsport High School.
She was formerly employed as fountain manager at People’s Drug Store; at J.J. Newberry’s for 20 years, View Street Restaurant and Old Orchard Supermarket for seven years, retiring in 1992.
She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1936, Cooties, a Red Feather of the Williamsport Red Men Tribe, Williamsport American Legion Post 202 Auxiliary, Elks, Eagles, AMVETS and Moose of Hagerstown. She also volunteered with the former Veterans Administration in Hagerstown and in Martinsburg, W.Va.
She is survived by her son, Gerald E. Boward of Hagerstown; one brother, Frederick Hemphill of Fresno, Calif.; many nieces and nephews; and cherished family and friends.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances E. Henry and Margaret E. Spessard; and four brothers, Donald Hemphill, Henry Hemphill, Paul Hemphill and Blaine Hemphill.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Ann Boyd will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.
