Charles Clinton McAtee Jr., 84, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Thursday, May 26, 2011, at Fahrney-Keedy Home near Boonsboro, Md.

Born July 23, 1926, in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late Charles Clinton McAtee and Clara Virginia (Foreman) McAtee.

He attended Burke Street Elementary School, graduated from Augusta Military Academy in Fort Defiance, Va., in 1943 and entered the U.S. Army Infantry Replacement Training Center in Fort McClellan, Ala., on Dec. 18, 1944.

During World War II, he served in the 40th Infantry Division, 63rd Infantry Regiment in Inchon, Korea, and with the 185th Infantry Medical Detachment in Taegu, Korea. He served with the 1591st Engineering Utilities Detachment as post fire chief at Camp Hillenmeyer in Korea. He received an honorable discharge from the Army on Jan. 4, 1949 as a sergeant while stationed at Camp Lee, Va.

He worked briefly as a clerk for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad after his discharge from the Army.

He was a professional firefighter for the city of Martinsburg from May 30, 1949, to Aug. 1, 1971. His first assignment was at Station 4 on Irish Hill (High Street). He was a past vice president of the West Virginia State Fire Fighters Association. He enjoyed making fire prevention presentations on behalf of the Martinsburg Fire Department in local schools and for civic organizations. He retired as a lieutenant.

Mr. McAtee was a former employee of Brown Funeral Home. He also had an avid interest in railroads.

He was member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 896 and American Legion Post 14.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Betty Lee McAtee, who died July 27, 2005.

He is survived by two sons, Charles "CC" McAtee III and wife, Terri, of Williamsport, Md., and Dwight "Ike" McAtee and wife, Dai, of Montpelier, Va.; one daughter, Annette Fraley and husband, Robert "Bob," of Boonsboro; and two grandchildren, Christopher and Sarah Fraley of Boonsboro.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with Pastors Jay Watson and Eric Johnson officiating. Military graveside services will be held in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. before the service at the funeral home.
