Charles Orville Reeder, 86, of 329 Devonshire Road, Hagerstown, Md., passed away Monday, March 7, 2011, at home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born Oct. 3, 1924, in Sharpsburg, Maryland, he was the son of the late Elmer McGill Reeder and Alice Easterday Reeder.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence McCarty Reeder.
Charles was a veteran of World War II with the U.S. Army, where he earned the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon and World War II Victory Ribbon. He retired from the City of Hagerstown and previously was employed with Bester Long Co.
He is survived by his companion of 33 years and the love of his life, Virginia P. “Polly” Petty; four stepsons, Raymond Petty Jr., Gregory Lee Petty, James Michael Petty and Barry Dean Petty all of Hagerstown; one sister, Lorraine Bowman of Boonsboro, Md.; one brother, Elwood Reeder of Hagerstown; six grandsons; seven granddaughters; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Calledith Mae Raines; and four brothers, John Reeder, Max Reeder, Carroll Reeder and infant Walter Reeder.
There will be no public visitation. It was Charles’ wishes to be cremated.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd. The Rev. William C. Crowe will officiate. Graveside service will follow in Locust Grove Cemetery in Boonsboro.
