David Earl Wolf Jr., 94, of Hagerstown, Md., died Friday, Dec. 23, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center.
Born Dec. 29, 1916, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late David Earl Wolf Sr. and Lillian Irene English Wolf.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys H. Wolf, who died Dec. 21, 2005. They had been married for 65 years.
He retired from J. Edward Cochran and Co. Insurance Agency.
He was a 1934 graduate of Hagerstown High School. He was treasurer of his senior class and chairman of the reunion committee. He spearheaded the establishment of a scholarship foundation at Hagerstown Community College in the name of the Class of 1934, which was funded by donations from class members. He also attended George Washington University.
He served as an officer in the U.S. Army during World War II and the U.S. Army Reserves following the war.
A member of St. John's Lutheran Church since 1946, he had served as president of the Church Council, president of the Men's Bible Class and had taught the High School Sunday School class. He was chairman of "The Four Horsemen," members of Washington County Lutheran churches who founded and developed Ravenwood Lutheran Village in 1975 and 1976. After he moved to the village in recent years, he served as chairman of the Ravenwood Advisory Council.
He was president of the Hagerstown Retailers Bureau in the early 1950s, a member of the Board of Directors of the Hagerstown Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the founding Board of Directors of the Washington County Commission on Aging. He was past chairman of the Board of Directors of Horizon Goodwill Industries and a board member since 1968. He was a member of Fountain Head Country Club since 1946 and the Hagerstown Lions Club since 1951. He was a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, Friendship AF&AM Lodge 84, Hagerstown Forest 95, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry and Hagerstown Shrine Club of Ali Ghan Shriners.
He is survived by two sons, David A. Wolf and his wife, Shanon, of Hagerstown, and Michael H. Wolf and his wife, Cathy, of Alpharetta, Ga.; and three grandsons, Kyle E. Wolf, Trevor D. Wolf and David L. Wolf.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Frances R. Wempe.
There will be a gathering of friends Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m.
A memorial service will be Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 141 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Blaine E. Feightner and the Rev. Edward H. Heim will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
