Donald Lee Burley, 76, of Williamsport, Md., passed away Jan. 9, 2013, after a lengthy battle with several illnesses.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 54 1/2 years, Mary Sue Burley. He was the son of the late Alice (Hay) Burley and H. Marsh Burley. Don was a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He is also survived by three children, Dr. J. Bruce Burley, Julie A. White, and Jodie L. Burley. He was extremely proud of his three grandchildren, Dr. J. Brandon Burley, Allison Kappler, and Celia White, and his great-grandson, Carter Lee Kappler. Also, very special to Don was his precious orange tabby cat, Yeti.
While in college he held three state swimming records for the state of West Virginia. After college graduation he was employed by Monongahela Power and Allegheny Power for 39 years. He retired as plant manager of R. Paul Smith Power Station in Williamsport, and district manager of power generation.
Don was a member of First Christian Church and served as president of National Little League in Hagerstown for three years. He was instrumental in establishing a minor little league and in constructing minor league fields to provide opportunity to all children who wanted to play baseball, something he felt very strongly about. He spent a lifetime coaching various sports and serving in various civic organizations, giving back to his community.
Services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown, Md., with the Rev. Steven Johns-Boehme officiating.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Interment will be at the Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
