Eugene L. “Lefty” Crumling, 89, of Yorkana, Pa., died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012, at his residence.
He was the husband of the late Lillian I. (Whiteman) Crumling.
Born in Wrightsville, Pa., he was the son of the late William H. and Grace A. (Dietz) Crumbling.
He played professional baseball for 13 years as a catcher in the Interstate League in Hagerstown, Md., Allentown, Pa., Sunbury, Pa., and York, Pa.; in the New York-Penn League in Elmira, N.Y., the International League in Buffalo and Rochester, N.Y.; the American Association in Columbus, Ohio, and in the National League for the St. Louis Cardinals. He also managed for Hagerstown and York in the Interstate League, and for Wellsville, N.Y., in the NY-PA-Ontario League. In 1995, he was voted into the York Sports Hall of Fame.
Gene was a bartender for the Kreutz Creek Valley VFW Post 7045 for 27 years.
He was a life member of the Victory AA of York, the Kreutz Creek Valley VFW Post 7045, the Hawk Gunning Club, AAPR, the Wrightsville Social Club, the Association of Professional Ball Players of America, Garden Grove, Calif., and the Major League Baseball Alumni Team, Colorado Springs, Colo., and was a member of the Locust Street United Methodist Church, Wrightsville. He was also a 1940 graduate of Wrightsville High School.
He is survived by a son, Joseph E. Crumling of Greencastle, Pa.; two brothers, Bill Crumbling of Yorkana, Pa., and Warren “Waz” Crumbling of Austin, Texas; two grandchildren, Michael E. Crumling of Texas and Dawn L. Taylor of Tarpon Springs, Fla.
Following cremation, services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
