Gene Howard Johnson, Jr. 24, of Hagerstown, Md., died Wednesday, May 17, 2012, at his home in Hagerstown.
Born Oct. 6, 1987, in Queens, N.Y., he was the son of Gene Howard and Judy Ann (White) Johnson Sr. of Hagerstown. He was the maternal grandson of Juanita Jacobs, also of Hagerstown.
Gene was a 2006 graduate of St. Maria Goretti High School, Hagerstown, where he made the game-winning shots in the Mid-Atlantic Invitational Basketball Tournament his senior year. He continued his education and basketball career at Morgan State University, where he was a walk-on whose team won three regular-season championships; two MEAC championships; made an appearance in the National Invitation Tournament; and had two berths in the NCAA Tournament. He graduated in the Class of 2011, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in sociology.
He attended Zion Baptist Church, Hagerstown, and found great joy in helping others.
In addition to his parents, Gene is survived by a stepbrother, Maurice W. Lundy of Queens; four stepsisters, Cindy W. Walker of Hagerstown, Theresa Y. Campbell of Brooklyn, N.Y., Stephanie S. Rice of Charlotte, N.C., and Queen Pittman of New York.
Gene was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Neil Williams; paternal grandparents, Queen E. and Jerry L. Johnson; and a sister, Jean Ardell Johnson.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2012, at the International Community Church of God, 123 Byte Drive, Frederick, MD 21702. The Rev. Jerry Price and Rickey A. Smith Sr. will officiate.
The visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2012, at the church.
The graveside committal service will be 10 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2012, at Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Maria Goretti High School Scholarship Fund, 1535 Oak Hill Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742.
Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, Bryan K. Kenworthy P.A., 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
