Harlan Semler Shifler, 90, of Boonsboro, Md., died Tuesday, March 5, 2013, at Meritus Medical Center.
Born Sept. 28, 1922, in Hagerstown, Md., he was the son of the late A. Kathryne Shifler and Hubert Shifler Sr. of Hagerstown.
He was married to his loving wife of 62 years, Phyllis Lambros Shifler.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hagerstown for all of his life. At Trinity, he served on numerous committees as well as being an usher.
He is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Shifler of Salisbury, Md., and Susan Shifler Green and husband, Joseph Reed Green, of Frederick, Md.; a brother, Richard Shifler of Arizona; granddaughter, Tara Marie Green of Frederick; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Hubert Shifler Jr. and twin, Charles (Tim) Shifler.
Growing up, he was a Boy Scout at Trinity Lutheran Church. He was a 1940 graduate of Hagerstown High School and attended Carroll College in Waukesha, Wis. He was a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42 for 65 years. Harlan was a longtime member of the Elks Club, the VFW of Frederick and the Moose. He was a founding father of Polecat Hollow Sportsmen’s Club. He loved hunting, trap and the outdoors. Due to his love of dogs, including his Irish Setter, Bailey, he was on the Washington County Humane Society board. He was also known for his great sense of humor.
He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1946. In World War II, he was in the Third Armored Spearhead Division attached to the Second Armored Division. He participated in the European and African Middle Eastern Theater (Battle of the Bulge and Battle of Rhine) as a private first class.
Harlan Shifler was the branch manager of Chrysler Financial Corporation for 39 years. He was a Selective Service board member for 20 years. Harlan was the first recipient of the Greater Hagerstown Board of Realtors Affiliate of the Year award in 1988. He was a member of the Maryland Improvement Contractors Association (helped organize chapter), Business Education Partnership Committee of the Hagerstown Chamber of Commerce, and participated in career days at Hagerstown Junior College and local home shows. He was the Associate of the Year for the Home Builders Association of Washington County in 1987, received the Spike Award in 1989, and was on the board of directors/membership committee chairman. He received the 1988 Most Valuable Award of Outstanding Membership Accomplishment of the National Association of Home Builders, and the Associate Retention All Star for 1989.
The family will receive friends Sunday, March 10, 2013, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The family also will receive friends Monday, March 11, 2013, from 10 to 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, North Potomac Street/Randolph Avenue, Hagerstown.
The service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dr. David G. Oravec will officiate.
A graveside service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, following service and reception at the church. Graveside military honors will be provided by Washington County AMVETS Post 10 and the Marine Corps League of Hagerstown.
