Hazel I. Harbaugh, 79, of Cascade Road, Cascade, Md., passed away Sunday, May 15, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown.
Born Feb. 8, 1932, in Five Forks, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ira and Ella (Newcomer) Fahrney.
She attended Shady Grove School.
She was employed as assistant manager for 20 years at Cascade American Legion Post 239 and was a member of the ladies auxiliary.
She enjoyed flowers, baking, cooking, reading and watching hummingbirds that she lovingly fed.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Arben A. “Toppy” Harbaugh, whom she married June 30, 1951; daughters, Sharon Rahochik and Sandy Calimer, both of Hagerstown, and Shawn Graff of Fairfield; sisters, Alice Hampshire of Hagerstown and Reba Hoover of Waynesboro; grandchildren, Graham Helwig, Guy Helwig, Cory Sanders, Emily Cobb, Jason Rahochik, Ellie Myers, Blaze Graff and Zane Graff; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by daughter, Shelly Helwig; son, Steven Harbaugh; brothers, Norman “Tuck” Fahrney, Wibur “Wib” Fahrney, Samuel Fahrney, Ray Fahrney and Elmer Fahrney; sisters, Mildred Helman, Beulah Rock, Lela Coover, Ruth Kell, Naomi Webb, Edna Hoover, Pearl Carbaugh, Bernice Olberholtzer and Anna Fahrney; and very dear friend, Mabel Louise Lins.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 19, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, Md., with Pastor Wilbur Besecker officiating.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:30 a.m. before the service. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
