John Eugene Bumbaugh, 71, of 77 Manor Drive, Hagerstown, Md., went to be with the Lord Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center.
He graduated from North Hagerstown High School in 1958.
He was employed with AT&T for 35 years, retiring in 1998.
John was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U.S. Navy.
He served on the Clear Spring Town Council, was a lifetime member of the Clear Spring Fire Co., a volunteer with the carnival, where he operated the Chuck Wheel Game, and a lifetime member of Clear Spring Ambulance. He coached Clear Spring Little League and was a Boy Scout leader of Troop 117 of Clear Spring.
He was past commander of Clear Spring American Legion Post 222; past commander of Western Maryland District American Legion; and past commander of Washington County American Legion. He was also a member of the Vietnam Last Mans Club, past commander of Funkstown American Legion Post 211, a lifetime member of the National American Legion, a member and past commander of The Forty and Eight and a member of Past Commanders Club, Department of Maryland.
He volunteered with the Hagerstown VA Clinic, Martinsburg VA Center, REACH and the Red Cross.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Pearl Embly Bumbaugh; two daughters, Susan Mills and Mary Ann Yeargan, both of Clear Spring; two sons, John Edward Bumbaugh and William (Bill) Eugene Bumbaugh, both of Hagerstown; two sisters, Connie Pratt of Hagerstown and Lori Staely of Scranton, Pa.; two brothers, George (Cookie) Bumbaugh of Hagerstown, and Terry Bumbaugh of Scranton; a daughter-in-law, Michelle Yeakle of Hagerstown; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one cousin, Judy Raysley of Hagerstown.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Kay Bumbaugh.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Michael K. Louia will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by Morris Frock American Legion Post 42.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 6 to 9 p.m.
