John Ruben Fridinger Jr., 85, of Hagerstown, Md., died unexpectedly Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, in Oneonta, N.Y.
Born Feb. 13, 1926, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late John R. and Fannie Bell (Semler) Fridinger Sr. He was the husband of 63 years to Phyllis Margaret (Randall) Fridinger of Hagerstown.
John served in the U.S. Navy for three years. He was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II.
John retired in 1985 from CSX Chessie Railroad, where he worked as a carman for more than 34 years. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and Western Enterprise Fire Co. 4, both of Hagerstown.
In addition to his wife, John is survived by three daughters, Janet Kolb of Martinsburg, W.Va., Vickie Bryan and husband, Edward, and Linda Ridenour, all of Hagerstown; four granddaughters, Dawn Marquez and husband, Samuel, of Martinsburg, Melissa Grove and husband, John, of Louisiana, Carrie Davis Ridenour of Hagerstown and Nicole Bakner of Waynesboro, Pa.; one grandson, John D. Swisher Jr. and wife, Marta, of Martinsburg; three great-grandsons; three great-granddaughters; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by one sister, Phyllis A. Godlove.
The funeral service will be Monday, Aug. 8, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown. The Rev. Robert McIntyre will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown. Military honors will be conducted by Washington County AMVETS Post 10 and the Marine Corps League Bulldog Detachment, Hagerstown.
Visitation will be from Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
