SMITHSBURG, Md. — Lt. Commander, retired, Laurence Sharpe, 88, of Smithsburg, passed away Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Shady Grove, Md.
Born Feb. 9, 1922, in Chicago, Ill., he was the son of the late Harry Sharpe and the late Bertha Potash Sharpe.
Larry received his B.A. from Albion College in Michigan and later his M.A. from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., and did additional graduate work at George Washington University.
Larry was an officer in the U.S. Navy in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, serving in many areas from skipper on a submarine chaser and patrol vessel to intelligence officer. He served in the U.S. Diplomatic Corps for 20 years as press attaché in Iran, Burma, Pakistan and Denmark. Larry had a second career as a professor of U.S. history at Hagerstown Community College for 21 years.
He was a life member of the Wolfsville Fire Co. and a board member of the HCC Athletic Boosters. He served for many years on the Maryland State and Frederick Forestry Boards. He was a member of B’nai Abraham Congregation in Hagerstown.
He is survived by his wife, Blanche; two daughters, Paula Rehr of North Potomac, Md., and Arlyn Sharpe of Los Altos, Calif.; one son, Allan Conan of Modesto, Calif.; six grandchildren, Eran Sharpe, Lorin Rehr, Ma’ayan Schoeman, Scott Rehr, Jay Weiler and Zachary Weiler; and five great-grandchildren, Ronni Sharpe, Tainn Schoeman, Liam Schoeman, Kai Sharpe and Gabriel Rehr.
He was preceded in death by a brother, George Sharpe.
A memorial service in Larry Sharpe’s honor will be held Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, at 7 p.m. at the Hagerstown Community College Athletic, Recreation and Community Center (ARCC).
Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
