Commander Leonard A. Daniel, USCG Ret., passed away June 4, 2011, at the age of 90. Cmdr. Daniel was residing with his daughter, Christine Constable and her husband, George, in Hagerstown, at the time of his death.
Atlanta, Ga., since 1972.
Commander Daniel was a U.S. Navy pilot in the South Pacific during World War II, and piloted search-and-rescue missions during his Coast Guard career.
Commander Daniel was preceded in death by his wife, Margie R. Daniel; and his daughter, Linda R. Daniel.
He is survived by his daughters, Cheryl M. Morgal of Upper Marlboro, Md., and F. Christine Constable of Hagerstown; and sons, Michael E. Daniel of Jupiter, Fla., Leonard A. Daniel Jr. of Atlanta, Russell E. Daniel of Canton, Ga., and John Hays of Mobile, Ala. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Commander Daniel was born Nov. 6, 1920, in Virgilina, Va.
He left the U.S. to live with his mother, Marcelle Carre, in France until the age of 21, when he returned to the U.S.
A memorial celebration of his life will be held in Atlanta on June 17, 2011.
