Louis S. "Lou" Parlato, 94, of Hagerstown, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Meritus Medical Center.
Born Nov. 7, 1918, in Long Island City, N.Y., he was the son of the late Vito Louis and Esther (Englehardt) Parlato.
Lou served 3 1/2 years in the U.S. Navy Seabees in Kodiak, Alaska, and in the Pacific during World War II. He returned to active duty for one year during the Korean War, where he was stationed on the Aleutian Islands.
He was employed by the Long Island Lighting Co. for 33 years and retired as district supervisor.
He was umpire for the local youth baseball club, and was a Scoutmaster and adviser to an Explorer troop. He, with the help of other dads, took the boys on several summer canoe trips down the Delaware River.
Lou also was a youth adviser in the Massapequa Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Bridge of Life church in Hagerstown and had volunteered at REACH of Washington County.
Lou loved his family and the Lord very much. During his retirement, he could always be relied on to help where help was needed. He will be remembered for his loving nature and big heart.
Lou is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Virginia (Zoller) Parlato; a daughter, Nancy LoPresto and husband, Constantine; a son, Steven Parlato and wife, Deborah, all of Hagerstown; a grandson, David Parlato of Bellingham, Wash.; a granddaughter, Esther LoPresto of Hagerstown; a niece, Janice Soares and husband, Tony, of New York; three nephews, John Lanza of Arizona, Eugene Lanza and wife, Teresa, of New York, and Douglas Ahlsen of New York.
In addition to his parents, Lou was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Ahlsen and Mary Lanza; and a brother, William Parlato.
A celebration-of-life service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. Jim Davies officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 7, 2013, at Rest Haven Cemetery, with military honors being accorded by the Navy and Washington County AMVETS Post No. 10. Friends will be received at the funeral home one hour prior to the burial.
