Marie B. Heacock, 89, formerly of Falls Church, Va., and Fort Myers, Fla., died peacefully May 9, 2011, at Loyalton of Hagerstown, Md.
Born Feb. 28, 1922, in Sleepy Eye, Minn., she was one of 12 children born to the late Peter and Mary Baltes.
She is survived by her husband, George Thomas Heacock of Sylacauga, Ala.; and three sons, Thomas M. Heacock of Hagerstown, Mark A. Heacock of Centreville, Va., and David A. Heacock, of Richmond, Va.; sisters, Margaret Levy of Cape Coral, Fla., and Helenette (Odilia) Baltes, Order of Saint Bernadette, of St. Cloud, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother of six and great-grandmother of four.
Marie had a passion for cooking, entertaining and serving others. During retirement, she enjoyed working with the James. E. Hendry Chapter of the American Hibiscus Society and traveling the world with her husband, George.
She was aide to five U.S. congressmen on Capitol Hill. At her retirement in 1984, U.S. Rep. Ike Skelton stated on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives: “Marie has brought her own special brand of sunshine to Capitol Hill for the past 15 years. We will surely miss her, but our lives are brighter because she has passed our way.”
Her interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
A memorial service will be held at the Hagerstown Church of the Nazarene, 141 North Edgewood Drive, Hagerstown, on Saturday, May 28, 2011, at 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Hospice of Washington County, 747 Northern Ave., Hagerstown MD 21742.
