Markwood Luther “Jack” Thurmond, 91, of Devonshire Road, Hagerstown, Md., passed away Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012, at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, Pa.
Born Aug. 14, 1921, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Howard C. and Adah Blanche (Harp) Thurmond.
He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School, Class of 1940.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Air Force.
He was employed by Fairchild Aircraft of Hagerstown for 40 years.
He was a life member of Christ’s Reformed Church of Hagerstown, a member of Funkstown American Legion Post 211, Friendship Lodge 84, Tall Cedars 95, AMVETS Post 10 of Hagerstown, The Improved Order of Red Men Tribe 84 and the YMCA.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Dora Schleigh Thurmond; stepson, Charles Holsinger and wife, Yvonne, of Davidsville, Pa.; stepgrandson, Dr. David Holsinger and wife, Kimberly, of Ebensburg, Pa.; stepgreat-grandsons, Daniel Holsinger, Brian Holsinger, Scott Holsinger and Matthew Holsinger, all of Ebensburg; niece, Mary Jane Delauder and husband, Richard, of Florida; and nephew, M. Stafford Thurmond of Florida.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Marlin Thurmond and Herschel Thurmond.
A memorial service will be Oct. 20, 2012, at 2 p.m. at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, Md.
