Richard R. Holmes, 89, died Friday, June 1, 2012, in Omaha, Neb.
He was born Nov. 12, 1922, in Smithsburg, Md.
He was a retired officer of the U.S. Army, a World War II veteran and a member of the Military Officers Association Heartland Chapter at Offutt Air Force Base, Neb.
He retired as director of the chemical and environmental laboratories for the Union Pacific Railroad. He previously was employed by Western Maryland Railway Co. in Hagerstown, Md.
He was a member of various technical and professional societies, past president of National Locomotive Maintenance Officers Association, member of Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church in Omaha, and previously a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Hagerstown. He also was a member of American Legion Post 1 and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 39.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, June E. Holmes; his parents, Sylvester and Margaret Holmes; and his brother, Marvin D. Holmes.
He is survived by daughters, Sandra K. of Port Townsend, Wash., and Sheryl J. of Seattle, Wash.; and twin grandsons, Dustin and Joel DiMauro of Santa Cruz, Calif.
A memorial service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church, 2650 Farnam St., Omaha. Private burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, Omaha.
