Virgil M. Spencer, 84, of Mercersburg, Pa., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2012, at Chambersburg Hospital in Chambersburg, Pa.
Born Aug. 23, 1928, in Paw Paw, W.Va., he was the son of Charles and Iva (Hamilton) Spencer.
He married Pauline (Frisby) Spencer on Feb. 14, 1953.
After serving in the Korean War as a military policeman, he was employed by Lowengart Tannery in Mercersburg, and later worked for and retired from Mack Trucks in Hagerstown, Md., after 26 years of service.
Virgil was a member of American Legion Post 830 in Mercersburg, Pa., and American Legion of Greencastle, Pa.
Before his illness, he enjoyed golfing and playing with his beloved dog, Carmen.
He will be dearly missed by his family and the staff at ManorCare Nursing Home in Chambersburg.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Pauline Spencer; one son, Nolan Spencer (wife Cynthia) of Chambersburg; one daughter, Julia Jenkins (husband Oscar) of Chambersburg; one grandson, Bradley Hess of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.; one granddaughter, Meghan Waters of Hagerstown; one brother, Ralph Spencer of Cumberland, Md.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, David Eugene Spencer.
A private memorial service will be held at the discretion of the family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Auer Cremation Society of Pennsylvania.
The family requests those who wish to make a donation in his name may do so to Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter in Chambersburg or to Disabled Veterans Association.
