Bill died at home among loved ones, as a result of ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig's disease, on Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012. Although ALS destroyed his physical self, the disease never changed his personality. He loved to joke, tease and insult anyone who came near him. Even the waitresses at restaurants were at his mercy when he'd ask to have his bill given to the table next to him. Diagnosed with ALS in 2008, he had time to prepare for his end of life, so when his family asked about his obituary, this what he said to write: "I was here, and now I'm not. Please don't be sad about my passing. I have moved on to bigger and better things. I want you to celebrate my life, remember and enjoy those memories of our good times together, and always embrace the gifts that each day brings. Help others and be ready, life is short. It is time to unite with our Father, and I am excited to go on this journey. I'm going to miss my love Susie, my little girl Amy, my son (in-law) Chris, my best buddy Connor, my prettiest face Brynnie, my "older sister" Marianne, my brother (in-law) Jim, my mom Peggy, my best niece Jennifer, my sweet girl Kendall, and my Roberoo. I love each of you in a very special way. I want to be remembered as someone that tried to be faithful to my Christian beliefs and helped others to do the same. Thank you to my friends for your love, many fun vacations, Friday night dinners, Sunday school discussions, visits, cards, phone calls, hugs, friendships and laughs. Have fun each and every day, and remember I will be waiting to be with you — my arms wide open and a smile on my face. See ya!"
Bill graduated from North Hagerstown High School in 1961, and worked most of his life at Danzer Metal Works, where he last served as vice president/general manager. Over his lifetime, he served on several boards, including the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army.
A memorial service will be held at First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown, MD 21742, Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, at 2 p.m., where he was a member. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church, and at home from 7 to 9 p.m.
