1976: The season's first case of Dutch Elm disease was confirmed in Aberdeen; the affected tree was in Wylie Park. Nine Dutch Elm cases were found in the city the previous summer.
1981: The office of chiropractor Dr. Cathy Moon-Hoyt opened at 104 S. Lincoln St. in Aberdeen.
1983: The space shuttle Challenger - carrying America's first woman in space, Sally K. Ride - coasted to a safe landing at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
2001: Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon arrived in the United States for talks with President George W. Bush.
