Pa. landowners will now bear tax burden
To the editor:
The Greencastle-Antrim School Board conducted its monthly meeting on Feb. 7. One topic on the agenda was a recommendation to repeal the per-capita tax levy effective July 1. By a majority vote, the recommendation was adopted.
The revenue lost from not collecting the per-capita tax will be recovered by increasing the cost of real estate taxes paid by property owners. I guess it was thought at one time that real estate owners were wealthy, so they were more able to pay taxes. I suspect there are many property owners in the Greencastle area living on low or fixed incomes who will be affected by this increase.
We all have a share in cost-of-living increases. The per-capita tax was a means by which everyone could share in the tax burden. It isn’t fair that landowners bear all of the responsibility for paying this tax.
Citizens are welcome to attend school board meetings and may address the Board of School Directors the first and third Thursdays of each month. The next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. in the middle school library.
