Columnist fails to see what is going on
To the editor:
In his Dec. 21 column, Allan Powell implies that anyone wanting to protect a child in the womb, or as he puts it “those who want to confer personhood on a fertilized egg,” are thereby “taking away the right to control one’s own body.” He puts these people among the list of horrors he catalogs from ancient Rome, through the Middle Ages and to the machinations of today’s evil corporations.
It seems strange to me that he spends a whole column proclaiming freedom but, in this case, wants to take away the life and liberty of a child at the very beginning of its existence. No objective understanding of human embryology can say that we are not dealing with a human being at his first instant of life. It is also by simple logic that we know human beings are human persons.
It is only by Powell’s use of his own “word magic,” in accepting an ideology that permits the “legal” choice to destroy a child in the womb, that he fails to see what is going on. Any nation capable of rational thought would be building a high wall of protection around its most precious asset, its children. Does he think eliminating financial bailouts and adding more kinds of regulations are the walls that will not be breached?
The Trojan Horse has been taken inside the gates already. The nation that destroys its children by “choice” has opened its gates to the final stage of its decline into a new Dark Age. Hopefully we will have, someplace in our country, the kind of walled monasteries that preserved the culture of Europe the last time we fell victim to our own hubris.
