Come out and support young volunteers

To the editor:

Hagerstown will celebrate its 250th Anniversary on Sept. 29, The streets will be closed for the all-day event with exhibits divided into three categories: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. Volunteer Washington County (VWC) is pleased to be hosting a table in the Today section, which highlights the best things currently happening in Hagerstown.

At the 250th Anniversary Celebration, VWC will be hosting a number of volunteer opportunities geared to young children. VWC wants to empower children to make a difference and experience the positive effects of volunteering. Research shows that the younger a child is when he/she has a positive volunteer experience, the more likely he/she will be a life-long volunteer.

VWC invites children of all ages to stop by and visit our table. Crayons, which are made of petroleum, will be collected and recycled. Clean out your art drawers and protect the environment at the same time! The crayons will be weighed and the elementary school that donates the greatest amount will be featured on Volunteer Washington County’s website. VWC will also collect new and gently used children’s books, which will be given to the Community Book Drive. Visitors can also design unique bookplates to be placed in the front of collected book.

VWC is looking forward to seeing you at Hagerstown’s Birthday Bash! Share a children’s book you no longer read, protect the environment, and create beautiful artwork for another, all at Volunteer Washington County’s table. See you there!
