“We’ve finally arrived in 1984. Big Brother is watching us through all the security cameras, the security inspections, our cellphones, whatever you want. Big Brother can see us. And now we’re in the age of doublespeak, where the Republicans are going to save Medicare by destroying it. What? It won’t be long, it’ll be part of a large corporation.”

“This is about the city council. It’s a shame that Mr. Easton is not running next year for city council. Far as I’m concerned, he’d be the best mayor for the City of Hagerstown that we could get. He’s there for the people. The rest of them, as far as I’m concerned, they’re in there to spend money. ... They aren’t worried about cutting taxes. Look at houses that are up for sale in the city. And people are not staying in the city, they’re moving. ... And as far as county commissioners, Terry Baker, you and Easton would have my vote any time.”

“I see where Mayor Bruchey and Councilman Metzner don’t understand the wishes of the city residents. We do not want a stadium. Let’s hope and pray that our state delegation hears the residents of Hagerstown’s cry, and don’t approve the millions of taxpayers’ dollars that would be wasted on a new stadium.”

“I don’t feel sorry for anyone who cries the poor mouth, if they’re loaded with tattoos, and smoke cigarettes and have fancy cellphones. It’s called getting your priorities straight. So don’t cry to me that you need money, when you’re paying hundreds of dollars for tattoos and cigarettes.”

“I’m so tired of hearing Republicans say we will take back our country. It’s always been our country and their country. Take it back from who? They want to privatize everything. You see what banks did to us, but see, none of them lost their homes, so it didn’t touch them. I think I would trust the government before I would trust any one person privatizing. Remember, after all, greed has taken over our country.”

“I’d like to reply to the person that actually criticized the person who had earlier called in about throwing your grass clippings out in the street and into the roadways. Well, some of these people better wake up because there are ordinances and laws against doing that, and one of the main reasons for cleaning up after mowing is to keep all that stuff out of the storm drains. Now, it’s your taxes that have to pay these people to go out there and clean out those storm drains.”

“I’m calling in reference to the Rockin’ at the River Bottom concert in Williamsport. First off, I want to know why ... good idea, wrong place. Why is this not being held at the barn, where a great deal of money has already been spent for these type of venues? Second, a license must be obtained for alcohol for these types of events. I have not seen where anyone has even applied for one. Where do you plan on parking approximately 6,000 people, and who will be covering security? I think this is a great idea and a way to raise money, but I think it’s being held totally in the wrong place.”

“I live in the South End, near the railroad. I’ve complained before about the noise all night long. Why doesn’t the railroad buy my house, and then I can move someplace where you can get a decent night’s sleep? I cannot believe people in the city are that narrow-minded, to not have a sound ordinance, to stop this from happening.”

“Congratulations, Hagerstown caller, on being better off now than you were four years ago — all thanks to President Obama. I’m not. My taxes are up, my food and insurance and other costs are way up, and I’m paying twice as much for gas, while still driving my clunker. It’s too old for the Cash for Clunkers giveaway, but I can’t afford a new car anyway, and that program, which subsidized your new car with my tax dollars, destroyed so many used cars, it ruined the supply, and drove prices up.”
