“I’m a volunteer at Hagerstown Community College, and recently I went over to help with the garden planting and mulching, and I was so impressed with the staff at the community college, especially Ed, the man who takes care of all the gardens and so forth. He had mulch brought to all 50 or 60 gardens, so that we, the volunteers, could take the mulch from the trucks and help get it around. He’s a wonderful person, and we appreciate all that he has done.”

“On the county roads, I wonder why the north side of Route 40 gets blacktopped, the south side gets tar and chip. Mill Point Road was as bad as the road ... and looks like tar and chip on that thing. And then they had that torn up for a long time. Beaver Creek Road, which is over three times further, got blacktop, plus their development up on top of the hill got blacktopped. Now I see them patching a little bit on Greenbrier Road. I was just wondering, were we in the poverty area down there on that south side of 40, or what?”

“Karen Harshman, why don’t you survey past board members and find out how many times a vote has been changed because a board member couldn’t be there?”
“Remember, Americans, Congress controls the spending. And for you people who fell for Bill Clinton’s rhetoric and his slick talking, the first two years was a total mess, and that’s why the Democrats got voted out. And after the last six years, that’s when the Republicans cut Bill Clinton’s spending. That’s why you had a balanced budget. It wasn’t Bill Clinton, but you people fall for his rhetoric because he takes credit for everything.”
“Berkeley Springs caller, you say, ‘These gun-rights activists are not too smart.’ Then you proceed to explain your personal views, which are exactly the same as those of gun-rights activists. What is your point? Were you just making an assessment of your own I.Q.?”

“I have decided that I will not hold it against Mitt Romney because he is a rich Republican businessman. I will not hold it against President Obama that he is a rich Democratic community organizer. I will not let the news media tell me who to vote for or influence who I vote for, until I check out the story they slant, to determine what is true and what is false. I will vote for the person whom I feel will turn this country around and save it, so my grandchildren will have a chance to enjoy what I have enjoyed.”
“To the person from Hagerstown who thinks they should not allow gays in the Boy Scouts because of what Jerry Sandusky did: Sandusky was a pedophile, not gay. Before you write in, do a little research.”
“To the caller from Hagerstown, wanting to know how to get to Point of Rocks: Well, since you’re calling from Hagerstown, Point of Rocks is a good fair piece away. I would recommend driving. I wouldn’t recommend walking, carrying your fishing pole. But seriously: 70 east, 15 south, go across the river, you’ve gone too far. Easy to find. Enjoy.”
“This thing with Penn State and Joe Paterno is really growing old because all anybody is doing is dragging Paterno’s name through the mud because he’s not here to protect himself. He can’t stand up and say, ‘OK, these are the people who I talked to, they didn’t do their job either.’ It’s just more evidence that sports takes precedence over education at a lot of these big institutions of learning. It’s not surprising the media’s handling it this way. Who is protecting the higher-ups in the school administration at Penn State?”
“I keep seeing commercials about how these people are saving money on gas, with the new hybrid and special cars. I’m wondering how much they’re spending on electricity to run those cars.”

“I’d like to know what’s going on in downtown Leitersburg. I pass through there on my way to Smithsburg, and outside of the square looks pretty nice, it’s beautiful, but the north side of the square is deteriorating, and the weeds are growing up. I thought the property owners were supposed to take care of cutting the weeds and keeping their property in good condition.”
“You know, President Obama is like a modern-day Robin Hood; take from the rich, who’s earned what they have, and give to the poor, who’s really never did anything.”
“For the person who would like to know the location of Point of Rocks, Md.: You may go to any Maryland State Police barracks, any Department of Natural Resources location, or any state representative’s office, and pick up a free — I repeat, free — map of Maryland.”
“To me, it seems it doesn’t take much to figure out one political party is almost insane, all because of revenge, greed and false pride.”
“I just wanted to announce to everyone that even though there’s a lot of negative energy going around, I think we all should be happy. I have a full tank of gas, and you know, that’s something to be glad about. I think everyone should be glad about this.”
“A functionally illiterate proletariat is easier to control than a literate one. Just ask any politician.”

“We’re having two full moons in August, and I’ve often heard people use the common saying, ‘Once in a blue moon,’ meaning ‘very rarely,’ in regards to this uncommon event, and that this is in fact where this phrase originated. But I’ve also read that it truly refers to an even rarer event, some claim when the full moon actually looks blue, due to rare atmospheric conditions, but they don’t agree as to what that event is. Anyone have any information or thoughts about this?”

“For the people whining that Penn State got too harsh a punishment, I say take the whole football program away. The attitude of some of these universities that football is the be-all, end-all, and those people are treated better than all the other students on campus. The business of a university is education, not football. Those students who play football should not have special privileges the way they did at Penn State. And you can read many articles about the way Paterno handled this. I say the punishment was not harsh enough.”
“Waynesboro caller, just because President Obama and four of his staff members have investments overseas — just like I do, in my 401(k) — it is nothing like Mitt Romney setting up an account, strictly overseas, to hide his money in. That’s not the same. Fox News is distorting the truth. And for you to say Fox News tells the truth, just because they tell conservatives slanted truth that you want to hear, is ridiculous. Fox News is not different than MSNBC telling the liberal side. They’re not real news, they’re opinions.”
“This is to the caller about the junk mail. If you’re getting a lot of those little catalogs in the mail, look for the customer service 800 number and give them a call. If it’s a charity that you give to and they are sending requests every month, send them a note saying, ‘Save your postage, please. Only one request per year.’ Try this. It does take a little time in the beginning, but it’s worth it. Some days, my mailbox is empty.”
“From an old man: Greener pastures are often no more than late summer crabgrass.”
“So wrong, Hagerstown caller. Obamacare, by taxing individuals and businesses for not buying government-mandated insurance, and slapping new taxes on medical devices, etc., doesn’t provide health care for everyone, or even insurance for all the insured. Because you apparently don’t even know this, everyone already has access to health care. By federal law, hospitals can’t turn away anyone in need of care. And it’s irrelevant that you had to provide prior year returns to your bank, broker, whatever, when you bought a house because you weren’t required to make them public.”
