“I’m calling in about the article on Feb. 6 about the Fairplay Fire Co. Commissioner Ruth Anne Callaham said we should go out and shake their hand and send them a check. If we did that, we’d only have one hand, and more money for them to pocket. I see that one of the firemen that they let go made junior fireman of Washington County at Williamsport.”
— Boonsboro
“It’s apparent after the recent situation with the Fairplay Fire Co. and the recent fire in downtown Williamsport that the volunteer fire service in Washington County needs a major overhaul. ... It’s time that this county moves toward a competent, career fire service with professional and competent leadership.”
— Washington County
“I don’t know what the problem is with the Fairplay Fire Co., or whether it’s the county offices, county commissioners, whoever it is, whatever. Doesn’t matter to me. All that I’m concerned about is the fact that my son lives in Fairplay, had a chimney fire this morning, luckily was able to put it out himself. Had that not happened, his house might have burned down. You all need to get your thing together, whatever it is, settle it.”
— Brownsville
“A person from the Halfway area can’t understand why they shut down the Fairplay fire department. We’ll trade you Fairplay’s management for your management anytime. I can’t understand why the IRS hasn’t made Fairplay open up their books. The only problem Fairplay’s fixed so far was the bathroom issue.”
— Fairplay
“I am calling in support of the board of county commissioners’ recent decision of a vote of 4-1 to close Fairplay fire department. I am also very much in support of the new leadership, and Bill Pennington and Leonard Heller must be removed from the fire department. The community deserves better leadership, and the community deserves to have their fire station back.”
— Fairplay
“Kudos to the Washington County board of county commissioners on closing Fairplay and doing the right thing for the citizens of Fairplay. There are more than 7,000 residents at risk here, not just two individuals, so thank you. Time to bring a fire department that’s worthy of this county back to the Fairplay area.”
— Fairplay
“For those folks who are calling in about Fairplay, all they’ve had to do is listen over the past year to the scanner, or be standing in a fire station, listening to the fire band when these guys are out on a call or trying to go on a call. And for the other one that said about Terry Baker, why don’t they ask him where his fundraiser for commissioner was held, and who held it? That’s pretty interesting, too.”
— Hagerstown
“If you did not read the letters to the editor on Sunday, Feb. 10, about the history of Fairplay Fire Co., written by Charles ‘Buddy’ Semler, please go back and read it. It is true. No one worked harder than the people of Fairplay to build this fire company. I think our commissioners are wrong to close it. I guess none of them live in the area this fire company services.”
— Williamsport
“Fairplay fire department being closed down — I think it is imperative that the Fairplay fire department remain closed, under current leadership, due to the fact that having those two in charge puts our community at risk, puts our lives at risk, puts our property at risk. They have said repeatedly they don’t want to run emergency medical service calls. ... They have no business running a volunteer fire department.”
— Fairplay
“I would like to say that I support our county commissioners for closing Fairplay fire hall, on the recommendations that were given to them by the task force. We need new leadership. Please do not even think about reinstating them.”
— Fairplay
“As a concerned citizen of Fairplay, I support the commissioners’ decision to shut down the Fairplay Fire Co. This fire company didn’t want to cooperate with the task force, so they got what they deserved. We have better qualified companies covering our area, with less response time. That alone says it all.”
— Fairplay
“I’m in support of what the commissioners did with Fairplay.”
— Williamsport
“I’m calling as a concerned citizen and a member of the Fairplay fire department. I do back the county commissioners’ decision on closing them down until the leadership is changed. We need our fire company back, with different leadership.”
— Fairplay
“I am calling in support of the four commissioners who voted to close Fairplay fire department. I also support the recommendations of the task force and commissioners to remove leadership and replace with new leaders, and the 78 applicants that filled out applications for membership to the fire department.”
— Fairplay
“I am calling in support of the commissioners’ recent ruling to remove the Fairplay fire department from operation, under its existing leadership. I support their efforts, and request that they ask for new leadership, elect new leadership to be installed there, so that operations can be resumed, and done well.”
— Fairplay
“I’m in full support of Washington County Board of County Commissioners in shutting down Fairplay. We have better service now than we’ve ever had prior, other than prior to 2008.”
— Fairplay
“Look, I have a weapon, and it has an eight-round clip in it. If I can’t take down an intruder with an eight-round clip, then I ought to get a baseball bat or rocks to throw at him. No one, no one needs an assault rifle with a 20- or 40-round magazine in it. And I’m a conservative.”
— Williamsport
“Remember when our government let airport security become so lax, 19 terrorists killed nearly 3,000 of us, and touched off a war we’re still fighting today? Remember, 9/11? We did not ban modern aircraft and limit fuel capacity. No, we put armed air marshals on every flight, and strengthened airport and cockpit security, and it worked — fact. You gun grabbers are barking up the wrong tree. Wake up, Marylanders. The only assault in this debate is the one being perpetrated on our constitutional rights.”
— Hagerstown
“If you’re a cat owner and your cat is clawing your furniture or whatever, go get a log and put it in your cat area. I got the idea from watching a cat sharpen his claws on a tree trunk. Guess what? The log works. My cats love it, and they use it. Problem solved. Too bad I can’t patent my log idea.”
— Clear Spring
“Roscoe Bartlett pulled off the greatest end run in the history of American politics. Neither Congress, the president nor the news media understood the true significance of one particular bill he authored. It may be many years before the full story comes out. His foresight may be instrumental in solving a major problem confronting the country. It is a national tragedy he was not re-elected.”
— Hagerstown
“In reference to A3 on the 6th, about the ‘Report shows county in good fiscal standing,’ that is wonderful, but where is the question that should have been asked and reported by The Herald-Mail: how much debt do we have, and how many years do we have to pay off each? That should be published and let known to the property tax owners of Washington County. And as for the airport, the 56,000 landings and take-offs, how much are we making, and what’s it costing us to run that airport?”
— Leitersburg
“In regards to the article published in The Herald-Mail newspaper, Wednesday, Feb. 6, page A15, ‘Pa. deli owner kills robbery suspect,’ this was a shootout, and the deli owner protected himself and property. Sorry about a lost life, but this is America, the reason for the Second Amendment and part of the reason we own guns; the other part for hunting and recreation.”
