“I am retired, and now I know why they call this your golden years. It is because they take all your gold.”
— Pondsville
“I’m calling and wondering why can’t they put ‘Mary Worth’ back in the paper, the comics? Or ‘Apartment 3-G,’ or there was one other one there. All they have now are something about a basset hound yapping at a Yorkie, or there’s Dagwood, and he’s still screaming at Blondie for his triple-decker sandwich, or ... and I just, they make no sense at all. But at least the others had a story.”
— Hagerstown
“I am over 70, and I’m not glad you removed ‘Rex Morgan’ or ‘Mary Worth.’ Take out the crossword puzzle, the word sleuth, and also ‘Born Loser’ and ‘Tundra,’ then you could put them back in.”
— Hagerstown
“Enough chatter about the comics. Don’t you people have more important problems than this to worry about? My job has taken me all over the world. I have been to Africa, Russia and Asia, where clean water, food and any medical care is a luxury. Be thankful you can read and afford a newspaper, and that you have the essentials in life. Quit complaining about the small stuff.”
— Hagerstown
“Concerning comics in The Herald-Mail, this is a newspaper. If you are so fixed on the comic section, buy a comic book. Most people don’t buy the newspaper to read comics. They buy the newspaper to read the news.”
— Maugansville
“I see in the Feb. 2 paper that lawmakers are considering allowing fire and rescue organizations to charge for their services. I’d like to ask one question: Is the public in Washington County going to have any input in this bill before it’s introduced in the legislature?”
— Hagerstown
“In reference to The Herald-Mail, on B10 and B13, I guess it is, today in the paper, that is a good way of laying out the paper, the comics, the horoscope, puzzles, coupons, ‘Ask Amy’ and all the others. It’s not hiding the ball on us, and it makes it a lot easier. Good job, Herald-Mail. A 50-year customer.”
— Leitersburg
“As a Washington County resident for over 50 years, I am urging the commissioners and those in control to not remove the drop-off bins. My community has its own trash collection, but does not collect recyclables. If you take away the bins in Maugansville, I won’t have any place to take recyclables. Please don’t do this.”
— Hagerstown
“Hagerstown caller, you claim President Obama is tougher on defense than Bush, because he approved killing bin Laden. Any president who wanted to be re-elected would have done so. That’s past, and he now proposes cutting 95,000 soldiers from the Army and Marines, gutting missile defense and vitally needed new weapon systems and upgrades, cutting naval forces, and more. Kudos to them, but we can’t defend our country with SEAL teams ... and dirt drones, and after Obama refused to destroy or retrieve the drone that went down in Iran, you think there’s any of our enemies don’t know about them?”
— Frederick, Md.
“The Williamsport article in today’s paper about tech school, they thought it was started for kids that weren’t doing well in school and needed to learn a trade. That is totally, totally incorrect. It was started for kids who felt like they didn’t want to go on to college, but they wanted to learn a trade, and believe me, there’s strict rules and all. Before you can go to that school you have to be making good grades and all. So you certainly, Williamsport, have your information wrong.”
— Hagerstown
“I’d like to know why churches don’t (revere) God’s house anymore. There’s loud talking. Your mind and heart should be on Jesus ... God and prayer before services begin. Then I believe we would see signs, wonders and miracles again. Also, I believe a preacher should look like a preacher, and not like a laborer, in jeans and shirt.”
— Hagerstown
“This is on tax hikes urged by Gov. O’Malley. This man must be in outer space or some place, raising taxes. He’s stating in here that we need to raise taxes, says for growth, job growth. He says that Maryland is moving out of the recession, but we still have to recover the jobs that we lost. You’re right, we have to recover jobs lost, but we’re not out of the recession, and it’s getting worse. People still don’t have jobs. I don’t know where this governor comes from. He needs to go back to school and do some more figuring, because he must (not be able to) add two and two.”
— Hagerstown
“Leonard Pitts would like for folks, some folks to have an unearned piece of the pie, taken from other folks who have an earned piece of the pie. I find that un-American.”
— Brightwood Acres East
“I am fairly liberal, but I don’t consider myself elite — but I know a lot of right-wing, holier-than-thou conservatives who think they are elite.”
— Hagerstown
