“I see where some thought that the federal government should bail out citizens because of what are called natural disasters. I find this not a part of what the federal government’s for. This should be covered by states or other organizations. If my house floods, I don’t expect the federal (government) ... however, where’s the line drawn? Is it a billion dollars, is it $2 billion? Why wouldn’t my house be replaced if it was ravaged by flood? I don’t think it would.”
— Washington County
“I am always amused at the ignorance of some of your callers; case in question being that autism may be linked to watching violence on TV. Children are born with autism. They do not obtain or acquire the statistics of autism by seeing who watches violence on TV.”
— Chewsville
“This is in response to the lady who wrote in the paper and said she’s a mom and a grandma, and she likes guns for target practice. That’s fine, and I have nothing against that. I don’t mind hunters having guns, keeping a gun in your home for protection, that sort of thing. What I’m against are these semi-automatic weapons that are out there, and these armor-piercing bullets. That’s what has to be stopped.”
— Hagerstown
“I pray our politicians will agree that no one should be able to own semi-automatic weapons. These guns should be strictly for the military.”
— Hagerstown
“The Washington County Commissioners should not give the Board of Education one more red cent until the BOE agrees to give or sell a small piece of land at the entrance to the Maugansville school along Maugans Avenue, for the Community Rescue Service’s new home in the Maugansville area.”
— Maugansville
“If I hear this one more time, my head’s going to explode: ‘It’s my God-given right to have guns.’ No, it’s not. It’s in the Bill of Rights, but it’s not God’s, God’s given right. God is a god of love, not a god of guns and violence. And besides, the Bill of Rights says, ‘the right to bear arms.’ What makes you think they weren’t talking about just rolling up your sleeves and bearing your arms? See, it’s all in the interpretation.”
— Hagerstown
“I was watching our local news, and they were talking about the school lunches, and how it was about the healthy part of it, and what I did see on there was that they are serving the lunches on a Styrofoam plate or Styrofoam tray, and I’d like for somebody to explain to me how that is going green. Why are they not being served on the plates (like) they were many years ago, yeah, not thrown in the landfill. How is this going green?”
— Halfway
“The increase in Social Security tax this year just returns the tax to its previous rate. In 2011, President Obama reduced the percentage as an economic stimulus. It never made sense to me to reduce it in the first place, since the reduced monies supporting the Social Security program, which is ... if you want to collect Social Security in the future, you need to invest in the program.”
— Hagerstown
“You guys think you’re seeing a little bit of the effects of the fiscal cliff right now, and what the politicians have done to us. Just wait a few months down the road, and then you’re going to see how your great President Obama and all of our great politicians have done things. And I’ll guarantee you one thing, they take care of themselves. I’ll bet they’re not going to feel the effects of anything.”
— Sharpsburg
“I can’t believe what I read in The Herald-Mail on Jan. 7 about the drum circle. Where in the Bible does it say a drum circle is to be in touch with the divine? To me, it’s just another way of worshipping and being in touch with idols.”
