“I so want to thank the lady who found my pocketbook in a cart, that I had forgot to put in the car at (a store) in Hagerstown last Friday. She will never know how much I appreciated that. I’m an elderly lady, and everything I own was in that bag, and it’s so wonderful to know we have, still have some very honest people, and I just wanted to thank her so much.”
— Hagerstown

“As I read The Herald-Mail daily about the various clashes and killings between different Muslim groups and sects, it surely makes Genesis in the Bible come alive. You read Genesis 25, verse 18, ‘and they lived in hostility toward all their brothers.’ And we think these people are going to have peace with us? Come on. OK, let’s just go to our Bible, find out what it says, and we’ll really wake up.”
— Washington County

“Enough with the speed cameras. They are like radar on the interstate; if you aren’t speeding, who cares. Speeding’s for speedways, not highways. The life you save may be your own.”
— Washington County

“How come it’s always the lobbyists, the NRA, and people who have guns, that make gun laws? How about the people who don’t have guns and don’t like guns? Why shouldn’t we able to write laws, too? They’re always in favor of you guys. According to your theory, you guys with the guns are safer anyway. I don’t have a gun, never had a gun, don’t believe in guns. So why can’t I write the law, because I’m the one who is unsafe? No, there’s money involved, and that’s the only reason the NRA is whooping and hollering.”
— Hagerstown

“Every time I open The Herald-Mail, I see Elvis birthday celebrations, tributes on a stage, and stories of Graceland. How about having that kind of idol worship for the likes of Washington, Lincoln and JFK — men who did what was hard, to attain greatness?”
— Waynesboro, Pa.

“This is just a few tips to the drivers — and I use that term loosely — drivers out there. When it’s raining, you should have your headlights on, when your windshield wipers are turning or moving. Second, the little bar on your left-hand side of your steering wheel is called a turn signal. Use it. And headlights on when it’s raining, please.”
— Hancock

“I keep calling you people and telling you about this scam, about where the people call and say that they’re getting bad things on their computer from yours, and they’re from the state bank and they’re from the FBI and all these places. Well, today I got one, and they asked for my daughter, and said that her computer was sending them bad information. Well, she lives clean into Martinsburg. And when I asked them why they called her, they said her computer was sending them a bunch of wrong information. And she doesn’t own a computer, either. So it’s a big scam.”
— Falling Waters, W.Va.

“I think that people who are interested in adopting a child from another country should forget about Russia, and turn their attention to Central America. The chances are real good that those children are going to end up here anyway, and it would at least be legal.”
— Hagerstown

“If you have not read, under ‘Letters to the editor,’ written by Robert Keplinger, on Jan. 9, please go back and read that letter. It is very true.”
— Williamsport

“Well, I hope all you people who voted for King Obama are happy. As I recall, he was supposed to be on the side of the working class. He was not going to raise taxes on the working class, because he was going to tax the rich. So now the new year has started and the average working person is paying $50 to $60 more in taxes. So nothing has changed. The working class gets taxed more so the ones who do not work can get more. But what I don’t understand is where are all of the news people who should be reporting this to everyone?”
— Mercersburg, Pa.

“It’s a shame that four counties and Baltimore City control our fate in Annapolis or in the U.S. Congress. We will never get the proper representation as long as the election process is the way it is. A change is needed. Maryland is the No. 2 worst for business and No. 5 in taxes, and I don’t see it getting any better. A retiree can only give so much money to pay for those who want the freebies (welfare, food stamps, unemployment). It would be a change if Western Maryland and the Eastern Shore could move to Virginia, where we could get a better living and better representation. It’s got my vote.”
— Boonsboro

“This is about the speed cameras. The only people who are upset about the speed cameras are the speeders. How refreshing it is to come in Northern Avenue, past the schools, and people are driving the speed limit. I have always driven the speed limit everywhere I go, so I’m not upset about it. I wish they could have them everywhere.”
— Hagerstown

“It was so nice a day on Saturday — made only nicer by four ... who thought that it was appropriate to sit in the parking lot at St. James Brethren Church and fire off their guns for an hour or two. These people don’t live in this neighborhood, and though they may go to the church, they weren’t interrupting their family’s peace and quiet on a weekend day. I’m sure their wives wouldn’t have wanted them sitting in the backyard with their friends, firing off guns.”
— Sharpsburg

“I’d like to know why there’s a delay in the taxes, just because the tax forms and all changed in January. The taxes that are coming up that we’re going to be paying on is for 2012, not 2013, so why do we have, why is there a delay? Makes no sense to me whatsoever.”
— Hancock
