“To the statement in the paper about the Bible and not judging people, from someone in Smithsburg: I know what the Bible says, but making a statement that’s actually the truth about someone, I guess hurts some people.”

“You know, for my grandkids, I’m getting concerned about these elections, that people that they’re electing to the high offices, they’re on the fringe ... they’re about half nuts, half of them. So I hope people will start using their heads and start voting for common sense people.”

“I went through (a drive-through) the other morning for breakfast, when I got up to the window, the girl had already told me that my meal was taken care of. And I just wanted to say thank you to that individual, and thank God that there’s still decent people around.”
— Hagerstown

“I’m calling to say that I don’t think we need to pay some more guys from down in Baltimore City to come up here and tell us that our downtown is dead. Anybody that has half a brain could see that long ago, and why do they think they need somebody like that to come and tell them what to do up here now? That’s all I got to say.”

“I see in The Herald-Mail that the great Gov. O’Malley is pushing to repeal the Maryland death penalty, and he says it does not work. Well, if it doesn’t work, I wish he would release the names of those who’ve been executed who have committed crimes. I think it works perfectly. If you’re executed, you don’t commit a crime. End of discussion.”

“As all of us watch, day by day, as more of our rights are eroded by Obama’s administration and all of these executive orders, I ask that all Americans reflect upon what a wonderful, wonderful country we had, that led the world in almost every aspect that’s important to us. It is gone.”
— Fayetteville, Pa.

“I’m wondering what in the world is going on this country. My husband took cash this morning to pay an insurance bill at a company — I won’t mention any names — and cash was turned down, and now we have to write a check. They’re more willing to take a chance on getting a check, that maybe would bounce, from somebody, but it just doesn’t make any common sense to me. What is going on, when they will not accept cash?”
— Hagerstown

“I just watched the president on TV, talking about what he wants done about the gun control, and there’s something that I got to thinking about, and my heart goes out to all the people who have lost everything, and I wonder, what are some people going to do when the grief that they have cannot be handled with the ones they love, and their homes are broken up? What about that loss, of the people who can’t find their way back to each other?”
— Falling Waters, W.Va.

“Front page, Gov. O’Malley says the death penalty is expensive, and it doesn’t work. Well, is it any more expensive than keeping a prisoner in jail for the rest of his life? And it does work, because the person can no longer go out and kill somebody else.”
— Williamsport

“On banning the death penalty: Follow the money. Since 1976, Maryland has executed only five people, at an average cost of $37 million each. Today there are five people on death row, with three of the crimes being from 1983. Certainly these five have cost millions, and more to come. I think the money should be spent on public safety, prisons, and a fund for victims’ families, but not on endless appeals. I favor life imprisonment.”
