Mail Call - July 3

July 3, 2012

“I’m going to solve this problem once and for all. Here’s what you do: You build a ballpark at HCC. You shift the old folks out there four times a week, and let them play baseball. Charge admission. Two birds, one stone. You’re welcome, Hagerstown.”

— Smithsburg

“I am being tormented to death by that credit card company that says they can lower your interest. I don’t even have a credit card, and they keep calling me. They have called me every day this week, and they just woke me up from a nap, and I’m sick. And I have turned them in to the Do Not Call list a dozen times, and they don’t do anything about it, and these people just keep calling and calling.”

— Hagerstown

“Friday, June 22, The Herald-Mail, I noticed that President Obama has invoked his executive privileges not to disclose any documents concerning the botched guntracking operation. Now, if he’s supposed to have so much transparency in his term for presidency, I think we need to find out what’s going on, and I just think that that would be a good idea to find out.”

— Hagerstown

“I’d like to thank Hagerstown Community College and the alumni association for putting on the wonderful ‘Red, White and Blue’ concert series that’s been taking place in the HCC alumni amphitheater. I understand there’s 12 concerts happening this year, and I’ve been to a couple so far, and they’re fabulous. They’re just a great group, and it’s a wonderful thing for Washington County.”

— Hagerstown

“I have a question I just want to know if anyone out there can answer. Who actually benefits from the recyclables, as plastics and newspapers and cardboard?”

— Hagerstown

“This is in reference to the Civil War Railroad Trail. That kind of money spent for leisure is crazy. We have a thing called the Chesapeake and Ohio towpath. It runs from Cumberland to Georgetown. Perfect bike path. Why spend the money when we have this in our own backyard?”

— Samples Manor

“If you think there’s something free, you be the one to give it.”

— Hagerstown

“In today’s article by Tim Rowland, he has certainly hit the nail on the head concerning the permits department of the Washington County government. The county commissioners need to get on the stick and take care of this problem.”

— Maugansville

“I wish the lawmakers of Maryland would change the law when it comes to workers’ comp. Six to eight weeks to get a check is ridiculous. Maryland has got to be the worst when it comes to workers’ comp. Actually, we’re not too good about anything anymore in this state.”

— Hagerstown

“Keep Hagerstown beautiful. Set a big blue trash can out in front of your house.”

— Hagerstown

“Do you like a nice, cold drink when that summer turns really hot? Well, so does your pet. Throw some ice cubes in your pet’s water and they’ll love you even more.”

— Clear Spring

“I still believe that animals should be called humans, and humans should be called animals. Have you ever noticed how animals will care for their young, and protect them and do anything to make sure they’re safe? Wonder why people aren’t a little more like that. They’ll have kids and they’ll just turn them loose, and then they end up in prison or wherever. So maybe we’ve got things at a reverse order.”

— Sharpsburg

This is in response to a Mail Call about health care for kids in schools. This is to a person in Hagerstown. You got in here that, about the kids in schools getting health care. When I went to school, I didn’t have health care in school. Sometimes a dentist would show up in school. We made it through school. You said you’re willing to pay a little more taxes to help these kids. Well, you can pay more taxes because I don’t think I want to pay any more taxes than what I’m paying now.”

— Hagerstown

“This is Grandma, in reply to the Washington County caller who replied to my Mail Call. It is not routine for a child to require insulin four times a day. My tax dollars pay for this service, to provide health care to a child while attending school. You disagree, let it be your child with a lifelong illness.”

— Smithsburg

“I thought we had three branches of government. The executive branch appears to be grabbing all the power. President Obama has used executive privilege to prevent release of ‘Fast and Furious’ documents, will not enforce Supreme Court illegal alien rule in Arizona, and who knows what will happen if the health care bill is altered by Supreme Court? This is scary.”

— Hagerstown

“Why do you people think the state should pay for the teachers’ retirement? I believe they work for Washington County Board of Education, not the state of Maryland. It should be cheaper for us to only have to pay for the Washington County teachers than have to put money in the fund for all of the teachers statewide.”

— Hagerstown

“Burhans Boulevard should be first priority in this town, not the ball stadium. Every taxpayer should have a say where their tax money goes. Take my tax money and fix Burhans. You can’t cross Franklin and Washington streets on Burhans, or go from Salem Avenue east over Burhans. It’s a bumpy mess and ruining the front end of vehicles. If you slow down, you have to worry about being rear-ended. Please fix Burhans Boulevard.”

— Hagerstown

“Question: Why doesn’t Hagerstown have a cooling shelter, like other towns and cities have? And another question is, why not put the senior citizens center down there on Baltimore Street instead of the stadium? You want to put something with that area, that would be great.”

— Hagerstown

“A pet peeve, and one customers don’t realize, is when restaurants add 20 percent to your check, they are including 20 percent of state tax, which could add extra to your bill. We shouldn’t be expected to tip on their tax. Tip on the total before tax is added. We are already paying their help.”

— Hagerstown

“Where are we supposed to recycle now? You took the bins from Clear Spring, you took the bins from Maugansville. When I recycled, I cut down my trash that goes to the dump by 90 percent because I avidly recycled. Now I need to pay more fees to go to the dump, put more in the landfill. This is ridiculous. But yet you have enough money to build a new stadium, which we do not need in Hagerstown. What’s wrong with the old stadium? This is ridiculous.”

— Clear Spring

“I’m calling in reference to a couple of articles I’ve read in Mail Call about people saying school nurses are not necessary, and when they went to school, they didn’t have them. I’d like to know how long it’s been since they’ve been in school, because I’m 70 years old. They had school nurses from day one when I was in grade school, until I graduated high school, and they are very important. Like I say, I don’t know where they went to school, but they have always had school nurses.”

— Williamsport

“Every day I read Mail Call, and all I see is this negative stuff in there. But I’d just like to say that if anybody wants to see something really nice and happy for a change, they should go to the 700 block of South Potomac Street, where a lady has planted a beautiful flower garden in her front yard. Just if you want to see something beautiful, just ride by the 700 block of South Potomac Street, by Garlinger, and you will see a beautiful flower garden out front. Just wanted to say thank you for the beautiful flowers and for sharing them with everybody.”

— Hagerstown

“I just want to say I think Hagerstown is a beautiful place to live, and I love my home here.”

— Hagerstown

“I’m calling about the nurse and the school system’s situation, the ones who were let go. I’m 57 years old and I went to Antietam Street School, E. Russell Hicks and South High. I never remember once seeing a nurse in those schools the whole time I went there. If you were sick, you went to your teacher, she sent you to the front office, the principal and the secretary up there either made a determination to call your parents or to let you lie down for a while. And they had a small cot that we laid on. But we never had a nurse that took our temperature and ... it’s ridiculous the way the system is now. They don’t need nurses in schools. If your kid’s that chronically ill, then he needs to be home-schooled.”

— Halfway

“To the Williamsport caller who hasn’t seen anything from President Obama in 3 1/2 years: It’s because of your tea party Congress, of voting ‘no’. Sarah Palin was the downfall of your party. Where have you been?”

— Hagerstown

“This Tim Rowland fella you got, he makes you think. I got an idea for that school. They could just put it up for naming rights, and they could name it the West City School at Home Depot, or the West City School at Walmart. I got another idea for that stadium. You could call it the Bruchey Stadium at The Herald-Mail.”

— Washington County
