“To the Hagerstown caller, about President Obama and oil prices and gas prices: Obama doesn’t have a magic wand to wave. If you want to complain, complain about the Republican House. They’re the ones who like to give all the oil companies big entitlements, cut their taxes, give them big tax breaks. Go to the people who are causing this. That’s your Republicans.”
— Hagerstown
“About the coverage of the Chicago Blackhawks, and the way that your newspaper does not cover sports from other parts of the country, I think it’s disgraceful that your paper does not cover sports the way it should. You ought to take a lead from the North Star Ledger in New Jersey on exactly how to cover sports.”
— Sharpsburg
“The article about the ‘Thunder over Blue Ridge air show canceled:’ This is another example of wasted taxpayer dollars. Taxpayers should not have been paying for this to start with. If they want to have shows like this, they should be charging admission, and it should cover the cost of the air show. Why would taxpayers be paying for this? Government waste.”
— Hagerstown
“I think one idea for the downtown area revitalization might be to put a multi-theater downtown. I noticed, I went to the movies the other day out on Leitersburg Pike, and I thought as I was leaving the theater, you know, if this had been downtown, in the downtown area, I would have gone to the movies downtown, and I noticed that there were people from the surrounding areas, from all over the place, parked in the lot to go see these movies. So it might be a good idea to put a movie theater in the downtown area. Make ample parking for people to park.”
— Hagerstown
“Reference to A3, Mr. Murray, our county administrator, and our elected county board, why cut the excise tax? Seventy-five percent or 70 percent goes to schools, to roads and other projects, and libraries. With the federal and state cutting back, now’s not the time to give the builders a free ride. If you don’t do that, then charge them an impact fee. Let’s be fair about it.”
— Washington County
“I just wanted to call and say I was at Western Heights Middle School Saturday night for a concert ..., and I wanted to tell everybody who put it together, the people who performed, they did a great job. It was marvelous, and I really enjoyed the concert. You guys did a great job. Way to go.”
— West End
“It may be 3 1/2 years away, but all week I’ve seen Jeb Bush on TV, as if he’s going to run for president. His father gave us a terrible recession, his brother gave us the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. No, we don’t want another Bush. So Jeb, stay in Florida and make your money and write books, but please, America will never elect another Bush for president.”
— Sharpsburg
“I see in the paper again today where the city is really trying to get the BOE to move their offices downtown. Try to stick with the old Allegheny Power place, Potomac Edison place, out on Downsville Pike. Like they said, they have plenty of room for an elementary school. That’ll save them millions of dollars. Plenty of room to park buses, access to the mall, access to the interstate, where there’s no traffic worries. Downsville Pike, no traffic worries. Please stick to the Downsville Pike location, BOE.”
— Hagerstown
“This concerns the budget cuts. Please call your congressman, to support the Air National Guard. They are cost-effective. They only use 6 percent of the U.S. Air Force budget, but the ANG provides 35 percent of U.S. Air Force capabilities. What a bargain.”
— Martinsburg, W.Va.
“I have lived for almost 47 years in Hagerstown, Md. I have never used a gun, I have never owned a gun, nor will I ever have to own a gun. So I say ban all guns, because that’s what’s murdering people. Also, while we’re on the subject, ban all alcohol. The world would be a better place.”
