“It’s a sad situation when it snows and you’re an elderly person, and your neighbors can’t help you clean up some of the snow on your sidewalk or around your mailbox or whatever. It’s a shame. Everybody’s all for themselves, and the heck with you. God help them when they need somebody to help them.”
— Hancock
“I’d like to ask the BOE to use their heads. Don’t build downtown. Don’t make another mistake like they did with Barbara Ingram, where there’s not enough room, and you’re tied into a tiny little space. Traffic is a nightmare. Build out in the outskirts, where you’ve got room to expand, building other buildings. Just don’t build downtown.”
— Halfway
“There’s a nice, brand-new remodeled building down on the first hundred block of North Mulberry Street. Maybe the BOE would consider that, if they want to move to downtown Hagerstown. Lots of parking in the rear.”
— Hagerstown
“This is to the person from Smithsburg who believes that the longer spring breaks scheduled for 2013 through 2014 is an attempt to have year-round school eventually. This was not the reason at all. This was done because of requests from parents and from teachers.”
— Hagerstown
“Concerning the death penalty in Maryland, it need not be repealed. Just live in the state of Maryland, and find out how much income tax you have to pay, at the state and local level.”
— Halfway
“I have the Herald-Mail in front of me. I thought it was interesting, kind of ironic, the articles on the front page, ‘Md. Senate approves death penalty repeal,’ and at the bottom, ‘Bill introduced to ban abortions at 20 weeks or later.’ I would think that probably the most hardened criminals are going to get to repeal. The most innocent among us are not going to be protected.”
— State Line, Pa.
“This is to the person who was talking about the legalization of marijuana, how it would destroy America, or Maryland. The fact is that we actually have methadone clinics, which is actually opiates, that people are on ... right in Maryland, right here in Hagerstown, actually. ... These people are driving around on opiates, opium. So how is this any more dangerous than marijuana? ... So why not legalize marijuana, and legalize it and make money on it, like we’re doing opium?”
— Hagerstown
“I always thought that the politician was elected to carry out the will of the people, but evidently not. I guess it is whoever slides the most money under the table.”
— Pondsville
“El presidente is now back-pedaling. His meeting with Republicans over lunch and dinner, now that his sequester option has failed, what’s next?”
— Hagerstown
“To get your water hot, go down to your basement where your water heater is, and you pull off the front lid of the water heater, and you’ll see a little knob there. You turn it up to — not the whole way up, but turn it up a little bit hotter, higher, to the right, and it will make the water hot.”
— Halfway
“This is about the ‘county school could lose $1.6 million to federal cuts’ article in today’s paper, March 7. Come on, all that hype over maybe 3 cents on a dollar, for six months? Let’s go in and really look at the Title One programs and how they gerrymander the districts around to make them exist in certain school areas. Not that we’re against federal money, but it’s a drop in the bucket.”
— Washington County
“This is to the caller regarding the basket bingo fundraisers. It is not fair for the sellers to also play the tip jars. The reason they play the tip jars is because they already know about the payouts, and what amount of money is still left in the jar to be paid out. Also, watch the barmaids. ... I have witnessed a barmaid give a heads-up to a boyfriend, to freeze the jar. She knew what amount of cash was left to be paid out, and it was his sign to freeze the jar. Think about it.”
— Maugansville
“To the BOE: Stick to your guns. Go out where the old PE building used to be, and you’ll have a much better setup, and you’ll be out of the downtown congestion and all the riff-raff and stuff that runs around down there, and it’ll be a much better place than what the city’s trying to push down your throat.”
— Hagerstown
“This is in reference to our illustrious U.S. post office in Hagerstown, our postmaster general, our U.S. Congress and our U.S. senators. I sent my Internal Revenue taxes to Kansas City the 6th of February. They received it Feb. 14. As of today, the 7th of March, I got my Return Receipt Requested back to me. Then they wonder why the post office should go out of business? That’s a pretty good reason.”
